You Have My Permission To Do It Because You Want To
Wouldn’t it make you happier?
It’s easy to be told to do things because it helps other people or helps the world or makes you look good. It’s easier to accept. Someone would tell us,
“You’d make an excellent librarian. You can help people find books to read or even tutor in reading! Do it to help others!”
This is okay of course because helping people is a very noble thing. However, have you met nurses who were very curt and rude to you — or to someone else?
I’m guessing the nurse was not doing her job because she is not passionate about it. She or he probably saw an ad for people to become nurses with the promise of earning a great living. They had bills to pay and needed short term schooling and voila! They are now a nurse.
The truth is some have not entered the nursing field(or any field inserted here) because it makes them feel good, or give them great joy.
They just have a couple of bills to pay.
In Elizabeth Gilbert’s book, Big Magic: Creative Living Beyond Fear, she talks a lot about not being afraid to live the life you were meant to live. At the same time she warns,
“You are not required to save the world with your creativity.”
