Why I Prefer Anime Over Real Life Shows

In the past 4 years or so, I have developed a healthy habit of watching anime every night. Some nights I do skip watching anime so I can catch Reign, Golden Girls, or All American- but overall, you will not finding me watching real-life shows too much.

In 2006, a nice young woman kindly introduced me to anime. She gave me Escaflowne, Inuyasha, and Boondocks DVDs and I remember taking them hesitantly because it was not my thing.

I was a Disney Watcher: The Little Mermaid, Aladdin, The Lion King — those kinds of animations I enjoyed. So, I had my own interest, I had my own diet of animations and books, thank you very much.

I still had not watched the DVDs for a few days, and she told me I can keep the discs for as long as I want, but one day, in the mid-afternoon, I baked me some jalapeño poppers, grabbed my soda, and went upstairs to my room(during this time I was still living at home with dad).

As soon as I put in Escaflowne, the visuals and intro music hit me. It was like ASMR while I snacked and laid back relaxing to something new and foreign to me. The drawings were more simplistic and the character’s eyes were so large. I fell in love with sunsets and over-the-water scenes immediately — the glittering shine and soft cloud imagery that floated by hooked me.
