I never thought I’d witness the day that books would be banned and scrubbed from shelves, faster than diseases and guns. According to Florida Governor Ron DeSantis, “Florida already teaches about the triumphs and tragedies of African Americans.” This movement gets deep, people, yet it is a simple act of defiance to the human spirit to control the digesting of ideas.

Banning books is not a “novel” idea

Banning books have been around for centuries.

The Bible was banned.

Even Shakespeare’s works, were banned.

According to my research, books are banned when a certain overly conservative/religious/political, group feels that the author’s words do not match their ideologies and beliefs.

A brief list of banned or challenged books, includes:

  • The Harry Potter Books-Most “frequently banned” between the years of 2000-2009.
  • The Handmaid’s Tale- 2019, challenged between the years of 2000–2009; is now a show on Hulu…imagine that!
  • Beloved by Toni Morrison- the 45th most challenged book from years 1990–1999.
  • Salman Rushdie’s The
