Perfect! But here is what I say to that…

In a recent interview with AARP, Tyler Perry reveals that he refuses to have the “race talk” with his 7-year-old son, Aman because right now, Aman attends school with children of all races and they are all in their purest form right now. He does not want to destroy his son’s innocence by discussing racism.

Even though Tyler Perry has a very VALID point, he says other things that I want to unpack here, and I also want to explain why some of what he says can’t be applicable to ALL Black families.

Talking about race is uncomfortable for everyone, Mr. Perry

Even though I agree with Tyler Perry, it’s the uncomfortable talks that we must have with children of today. We have to talk to them about the importance of eating peas, the pitfalls of being a bully and what to do if bullied.

The birds and the bees (using safe language of course).

The bottom line is talking about race tends to make me uncomfortable too because it is an uncomfortable subject, and quite frankly, it is frightening to think there are actual human beings out here who can harm someone over their skin tone.
