Every writer has their reasons, but the audience wants an evolution in creativity from Mr. Perry.
Tyler Perry’s latest movie, Divorce in the Black, has received a 0% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, which says a lot. However, Tyler Perry isn’t bothered by what “high brow kneegrows” think of his films. The issue isn’t whether Tyler Perry should change his familiar format; it’s about his audience. When Tyler Perry first appeared as an older, gun-wielding, Bible-quoting Black woman in drag, we all laughed and spent money on his plays and movies. It was innovative at the time, especially for churchgoers who could finally bring their parents to a movie and enjoy a guilt-free, fun experience.
Over the years, we’ve supported his shows like House of Payne, Sistas, and The Oval without much question. But now, as consumers, especially Black consumers, we need to ask ourselves: Are we supporting too much Black drama? Do we understand what long-term happiness is? Have we lived…
