‘Tomie’ Is Probably The Creepiest Manga I’ve Ever Read
On a scale of 1 to 10, ‘Tomie’ is a creepy 11
‘No Use Escaping Tomie’ is about a young girl who cannot die. Ever. The really creepy part is that men who fall for her are so obsessed that they try to murder her, typically by dismemberment but none of it works on her.
This is my first Junji Ito manga to read, and let me tell you, it was dark, it was creepy, and it was 700+ pages of psychological disorder.
Tomie is of course, extremely beautiful, but she is extremely narcissistic and purposely make people feel like cow dung. The men are easily ensnared by her looks and sometimes they overlook the horrible insults she hurls at them.
There were at least two men who did not immediately succumb to her charms, but what became of them was ghastly.
To be honest, Tomie does not truly kill anyone. However, the fact that she keeps coming back and has this perfect, evil sneer on her face is what also makes this story horrific.
Critical and Mixed Reviews
Even though I, personally give this book 5 stars, some reviewers, women in particular, did not like what the book represented.
