This Jaded Little Beetle

A beetle ballad

You must be unhappy, beautiful beetle.
this is your jaggled little Summer
because I nearly crushed your existence with my sandal
yet your emerald hue saved your life —
Is this not the truth of us all who lay
in the cracks of a cemented kingdom?

Summer Sun rolls in like a frolicking Green —
six legged jaded beetles writhing on their backs in green

Where did you hail from — a small kingdom?
A place in the heavens where it rains on us all
Or is the blazing whips of the sun striking your life
before tossing you to the ridge of my sandal
before your gods cracked your April into Winter
Oh, jaded, faded, shiny, floppy beetle!

For some reason, I always come back to the time I came across a beautiful, green beetle. This may have been in 2017 or 2018, but either way it was a warm day and I was on my way to work and I nearly stepped on it by accident (I wasn’t wearing my sandals of course as indicated in the poem), but I felt bad it was just wiggling on its back, legs dancing all around like a child getting beat by the sun.

Needless to say, it makes for an interesting writing piece!

Thanks for reading!
