This 90’s R&B Loverboy Is Suddenly a Meme?!
Ginuwine went from every woman’s dream, to being compared to cartoon characters — what happened?
It was 1996. I was a teenager, sitting in front of dad’s big screen television, watching some young, brown man glide across a stage in some hick backwater club as he crooned, about someone “riding his pony”.
That was the start to me and every other hot blooded American chick lovin’ Ginwine’s, er, talent.
This was the world’s first introduction to Elgin Lumpkin, a.k.a. Ginuwine. Oh, we fell for it all: His looks, his curly hair, that smile, and those dance moves were fire! His voice was distinct, quite different from all the other singers but was easily matched with legendary Timbaland’s iconic beats.
It was even more cool that Ginuwine was part of the Super Friends camp: Missy Elliot, Aaliyah, Magoo, Playa and others.
Needless to say, the mid-90’s would not have been complete without me using my allowance money to buy Ginuwine’s albums. At least his first two. I used to stay up late to catch “Tell me Do You Wanna” and “I’ll Do anything I’m sorry” videos on BET, and any late night show he may have been on.
I was definitely a fan.
