The Reason Why Black History Month Seems Quiet This Year
An essay on the evolution of Today’s Black History Month
During Black History Month, I’m going to attempt to highlight Black Literature and other think pieces pertaining to Blackness. Thank you in advance for reading and for your support! 💖
It’s February 1st and as one Black person said on Swell: “It’s mighty quiet this Black History Month. Where’s everyone at?” A very valid question considering that we are at the 98th anniversary of having Black History Month ; it was created by historian Carter G. Woodson in 1926 and used to last for only one week.
However, as the Swell podcaster mentioned, “Since we have access to knowledge of our history, would we even need Black history?”
I’ll share with you what I shared with her.
Access to knowledge and celebration are the same, yet different things
I understand that we now have access to knowledge through iPhones, Google, libraries and such, so there really isn’t a need for a month in order to dive into that information.
However, does this mean we can’t celebrate Black History Month?
