So many heartfelt words in this article and I loved how you touched on parenting styles and public school influences on Americans/American Blacks.
I think for American Blacks, it is a multilayered problem. For example , I am grateful that my father who worked 2 jobs in the past, took time to help me read and understand math. But over time, I had to make use of school tutors because my father did have to work. He was a single parent.
I watch my sister go through it now. Her kids father passed away years ago, and so I commend her in checking their homework - she is a teacher herself and very active with their academics. When I used to babysit for her I would help them.
But I know it is very hard in many households, especially the hoods. Granted none of us are in hoods anymore, but this is when the communities, especially schools can step it up more to help foster a brighter future for the children.
