Self-Deprecation Is Not A Sweet, Humbling Trait

Just ask the rooster…

If I Ain't Readin'

If you ever need a quick boost in self- esteem, an old folk tale may be just the medicine you need.

Have you ever received a compliment and shyly held your head down and said something along the lines of, “Oh, this old thing?”

More specifically, a Tik Toker who calls herself Wemi(@Wemiopakunle) recounted a story about when she was a fashion blogger and how an opportunity arose for her — a big opportunity, and one of her so -called friends said, “No offense…but why you?”

To which she replied: “I don’t know…they just found me.” She then walked away.

She explains that this could be why some ladies (and men) do not take their accomplishments well — they don’t want to be seen as arrogant by saying, “I deserve it!”

I get it.

We don’t want to be a b$&ch about our accomplishments — but why can’t we be proud of ourself? I suspect years of let downs and put downs can make a woman’s self-worth feel like a shaky foundation.

In this case, Wemi could have held her head high and said, “They chose me because I put in the work. That is why.” She is a motivation coach now and I am thankful for her own experiences so we can all get motivation from it.
