It was June 2021 and we had just left our nephew’s high school graduation. I wore all white: a white African headwrap, a long white dress, and a big smile because we were so excited for my nephew…

And hungry.

The original plan was to just have a cookout or go to a local seafood restaurant and then conclude the day.

My sister-in-law had other plans. She wanted to drive further down to another restaurant, down by the docks where the scenery was just too pleasant. My husband wasn’t too pleased though, because the important thing for us was to make reservations first and stick to local places we do know.

I got a bad feeling about this but decided to place those feelings on the backburner. For now.

Enter: Restaurant scene

We come across a crab shack, that is small and mostly filled with white people. This did not bother me. The cashier seemed nice enough and by this time we are a party of 9 and ravenous. Already another restaurant told us they couldn’t seat us all because of the stupid pandemic and Covid-19 precautions.

We understood. Even when the patio section outside was empty with the pretty white and blue umbrellas at every seat, looking very inviting to us, the…
