Longer Life, Happier Life? Think Again!

There’s a myth that living longer means you are doing something right, but what about those with chronic conditions? Should we look forward to fighting for health forever?

Here’s a typical conversation I now have with my doctor these days(this actually occurred):

“Erica, you must take your statins, you have a 17% chance of a cardiovascular event or stroke in the next ten years.”

“They make me feel bad, Doc. Can’t I find a natural remedy or supplement? Can you suggest any?”

Hesitation. “I can’t endorse medications that are not backed by extensive research. Listen, just take a half of the pill if that will be better. You must exercise 30 minutes a day. Are you taking your blood pressure pills? Are you taking the Metformin?”

After my conversation with the doctor, I felt despondent and confused. I understood that taking medication with potential side effects, eating bland food, and exercising intensely could prolong my life. Yet, I couldn’t help but wonder, “Is this truly living?”

The prevailing belief online seems to be that being a Type 2 Diabetic may reduce one’s lifespan by 10 to 15 years, and that intense exercise and strict dieting…
