Is the Song, “Lift Every Voice and Sing”, a Nefarious Tool For Division?

Understanding where we are as Blacks living in America, may help paint a clearer picture

Along with Awards shows, I rarely if ever watch football — so when I heard that the super talented Andra Day sang “Lift Every Voice and Sing”, I had to view it for myself. However, the backlash that came whipping down upon her performance, was not such a lovely thing to watch.

From what I hear, Reba McEntire brought the house down with her beautiful rendition of the National Anthem. However, when I watched Andra Day’s performance, I had several emotions.

The first was sadness.

I could tell she was nervous. Reportedly, she even said she would be nervous performing this song. Not just any song, but the unofficial Black National Anthem.

The second emotion was slight cringe…some notes she belted out did not agree with me, but again — she said she was nervous. However, towards the end of the song, I felt elation and admiration. Andra showed the proud vocal range of her…
