I’m Sorry FX, But I’m Done With Slave Movies

FX is releasing ‘Kindred’ and I am not watching it

Kindred the Graphic Novel by Damian Duffy and John Jennings

Just over a day ago, it was announced that the late Octavia Butler’s Kindred novel will be adapted as a series on FX.

This bothers me for two reasons.

For one, I could have sworn my favorite author said she did not want any of her books made into a movie/film. I can never find that interview because it is so old, but I remember wondering aloud, “Why would someone not want their books made into movies?”

As I pondered this, I came to a conclusion: It’s her right. It’s her business.

Secondly, I will not be watching Kindred because….

I. Am. Tired. Of. Slave. Movies.

Learning about the sordid Transatlantic Slave Trade is crucial to seeing the monster behind the smiles that is America. I get it.

Yet, Octavia has so many other books that are rich in story, full of action, placing black people in a place of strength, curiosity, and power. Books like Patternmaster- where it takes place in the distant future with people connected to a network called, “the pattern”. That book was super hard to put down.
