I am reading a deep historical book right now complete with maps and so this advice is on point.

Review your notes. Note-taking is an important habit when it comes to reading technical material — be it books or documents. And to make the most out of your notes you need to review them on a regular basis. This will help you internalize what you have learned from that book. And over time you will realize the need to review lessens.
