Paul Mooney made a joke one time saying, the only difference between Island Blacks and American Blacks, is that the Island Blacks got dropped off first. That’s why they act more…haughty.

My husband and I had a conversation today about victimhood.

He is a FIRM believer that we as Black people should not take on the mentality of a victim because it can breed really nasty behaviors.

Such as:

  • Not looking some people in the eye.
  • Giving passes to Blacks who actually hurt other Blacks.
  • Cause us to be in panic attack mode at every turn.
  • Seeing every circumstance as race related.
  • And even worse — causing us to believe we can’t do better or be better.

I agree with him.

We both agree on something else too.

That some Blacks who believe that we can be all that we can be just because we can share the same drinking fountain now or use smartphones, are completely missing a key thing. I can’t even define what that one thing is, but it is somewhat disturbing to me to actually dismiss real life experiences of Blacks as a…
