How To Respond Effectively to Common Myths About Type 2 Diabetes
Type 2 Diabetics have 99 problems, and a fool ain’t one
One thing Type 1 Diabetics never have to hear is that their diabetes is their fault. Theirs is more of an immunodeficiency problem and most are born with it. However, if you are a Type 2 Diabetic like me, the world believes you scarfed down donuts and sat down all day and that you’re fat because you want to be.
Here are some ways you can knock down those myths without knocking their teeth out. You’re welcome.
Myth #1- All diabetics are fat
I worked in a hospital where an overweight woman was obese and diabetic. However, as I’ve gotten older, I met Type 2 Diabetics from all walks of life. In fact, a Lyft driver told me recently that he would not have known I was diabetic if I hadn’t mentioned it because I did not appear overweight.
He was a diabetic himself and I told him we are all different. In fact, the next time someone tell you that “all diabetics are fat” or that “most are fat”, remind them that diabetes affect people who mostly have fat ON their organs, not just under the skin.
