How Should We View The Oscar Snubs Of Black People?
In a way that’s most unpopular, but forgiving
We all hurt when Angela Bassett did not receive her Oscars for her role in Wakanda Forever. We all watched the trailer when she delivered that deeply chilling and moving speech. Our hearts pounded to the rhythm of: “Get that Oscar, Get that Oscar, Get that Oscar, Angela.” We just KNEW Angela Basset would receive her award for such stellar acting.
Yet — she didn’t.
How dare people say she should fix her face a certain way? She was upset! That’s her face! Her body. Angela Bassett can fix her expression however she wants to in any given situation.
The war against Black bodies is real.
The Oscars has been around almost 100 years. At least 22 Blacks have won since then. Those numbers alone should tell us two things:
One — the Oscars is not for us.
Two — the Oscars is DEFINITELY not for us.
