How Harmful Is Cancel Culture?
Looking at its beginnings and future and how it affects us all
When someone is “cancelled”, it typically means they’ve said or done something unfavorable. In today’s society, with nearly everyone having access to social media, you never know if your deeds can cause your value, your worth to plummet.
There is a discussion going on about it right now on Swell. I’ve added my voice as well. Consider getting the free Swell app so you can share your voice with the world too.
Cancel Culture’s “humble” beginnings
Cancel culture typically began as a “call out culture” in the mid 2000s and later, especially in 2020. This was first seen when Susy Park called out a blatant racist on Twitter using the now infamous hashtag, #CancelColbert, although you can insert any person’s name after “cancel” and share it these days.
We really saw an uptick in cancel culture during the #MeToo movement where women(rightfully so), called out pervs and other abusers in the industry.
