Do I Even Need a Journal In This Phase of My Life?
Learning from what life has to offer writers
I just turned 41, and I wonder if keeping a journal this late in the game, is even worth it.
I used to have diaries I wrote in when I was a kid. As a teenager, I used fresh, shiny notebooks from the dollar store(they had no locks therefore someone was able to read it and was angry about what I wrote).
As an adult from my 20’s on up, I became serious about my writing. Keeping a writing schedule, working full time or part time wherever I was at, and entering writing contests.
No journal though.
Later in life, I heard about keeping a poetic or writer’s journal. I learned that keeping a log of your thoughts is therapeutic. You can go back over those logs and use them as fodder for stories and memoirs.
I attended Matthew McConaughey’s Virtual event a couple of months back, and I learned he kept journals all his life. Which means he has half a century of writings that detailed his patterns of growth. In fact, his book Green Lights *is based off these journals of his. People had positive and critical reviews of his work.
