Black Authors Get Candid About Their Writing Process and Ancestors
The 1-hour experience was unforgettable as authors talked about eerie yet enlightening subject matters
The Virginia Festival of the Book Virginia Humanities was held this year March 16–20, as a hybrid event and I had the pleasure of attending on Day 4 to witness the breathtaking discussion with authors Amber McBride, Robert James, Jr,. and Jason Mott.
After clicking on “Watch Live”, the Facebook page opens up and on the screen, I see a long, rectangular brown table with mics. Behind those mics are moderator Hannah Oliver, Amber McBride author of Me Moth, Robert Jones, Jr., author of The Prophets, and finally Jason Mott author of Hell of a Book.
I was pleasantly surprised and overjoyed while watching this panel discussion. It was so candid and warm.
This was my first time attending a Book Festival, so I didn’t know what to expect. It was virtual, but I felt as if I were truly there and the surprise is that the authors looked like me.
Amber had her hair coiffed in locks and wore all black, looking every bit the YA book publishing professor. Robert had on his pink bow-tie and plaid shirt, calm under a quiet strength, while Jason held a charming smile at some points…
