As Deep As Oceans and Space

A poem about “deepness”

I was told long ago that I wasn’t deep
Just…
A shiny, shimmery bubbly surface of brown gold beauty
Full of half-witted talk

Maybe they were right
I
Am not as deep as people think. I am the
The pond that is shallow enough to let
The sun run her fingers over
The turtle resting on the shore —

Where it pokes out its neck
To sunbathe
Deep space is all I think about
But I usually
am spaced out

Preferring to gaze long
at everything and nothing
While an old song plays in
in my heart

So no, I’m not deep as space
Or fathomless as the ocean
I’m the pebble that skims
across the top —

After being thrown and
seeing how far I can go
Or make ripples spread.
