Apples Could Be The Deceiving Fruit We All Read About
Is there some truth to the poisonous apple story?
You’ve heard the sayings:
One bad apple spoils the bunch.
Wicked stepmothers give poisonous apples to young women.
Or my favorite, Eve ate the apple first(we aren’t truly sure it was an apple)
Perhaps there is some truth to apples being poisonous.
Lately, I have been hearing and reading about apples being toxic. So I decided to do a little research.
The results are in: they can be poisonous.
But wait.
Before you toss your lovely apple into the trash can. Be aware that it is the seed of the apple that is the culprit. Not the flesh itself.
Also, be doubly aware that there is more to the juicy, succulent sweetness than we think.
According to Britannica.com,
Apple seeds (and the seeds of related plants, such as pears and cherries) contain amygdalin, a cyanogenic glycoside composed of cyanide and sugar.
Cyanide, being the HIGH key word here.
It is dangerous. No joke.
