6 Things I Wish I Knew About Diabesity
And why magic pills seem to be the answer for an unstable, demoralizing nation
The deadly mix of fat and insulin resistance is a silent assassin for our hearts, yet how many of us truly understand what happens before, during, and after a diagnosis? Unfortunately, I find myself as a statistic in both arenas — battling not only diabetes but also high blood pressure and cholesterol. When I reflect on my past, I envision a future full of lean bodies and lingering questions.
There are six crucial things I wish I had known about “diabesity.” Perhaps, if I had known, I might have avoided this fate… just maybe.
1. It’s Not Just an “Old Person’s” Disease
I’m not that old.
I was diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes at 41 April 2023. During that time, I worked from home, leading a predominantly sedentary lifestyle. At 19, I worked in a hospital and saw older, obese patients losing limbs to diabetes. I remember thinking, “That could never be me. I’m young and will never get fat.”
I pitied them, and I felt guilty for my thoughts. Now, I understand that diabetes, much like cancer, does not discriminate.
Diseases are no respecters of persons
