My opinion regarding cypher’s motives

The Matrix was groundbreaking for many reasons:

  • It had a diversified crew.
  • The cinematography was excellent.
  • It had a nice combo of martial arts and war against the machines mixture.
  • It starred my favorite actors Keanu Reeves and Laurence Fishburne among other actors and actresses.

In a nutshell, the Matrix is about people’s minds being controlled by the simulation construct of the matrix. The “real” world is but a dream world cooked up by machines, but Neo(Keanu Reeves) is the One who can break all the rules and free the people.

Now, enter Cypher.

When Neo is rescued, Cypher is the one who we can already tell, has a thing for Trinity — Neo’s love interest. You detect sneaky vibes off of him and he even seems nice when he chats with Neo about him possibly being the one. He says, “ So you’re the one who’s going to save the world. What do you say to something like that?”

But then Cypher betrays Neo and everyone else. What would make someone do that?
